Even though I am not the biggest fan of prints, I can always appreciate a good classic and so I am totally on board with the vichy (or gingham) trend. There’s something about this pattern that makes me want to go outside and have a picknick in the park. That would have been totally possible, if only it wasn’t raining right now (oh spring, come back soon will you!).

Gingham or Vichy
Did you know gingham used to be a striped pattern? The fabric was manufactured in the early 17th century in Dutch colonized Indonesia, where the striped fabric was called “genggang” which means so much as striped in Malaysian. It wasn’t until the 18th century that it became checkered.
However, there are many countries that claim to be the original manufacturers, amongst them the French, who had a different name for the fabric: Vichy. While the origin of the checkered pattern still remains unclear, it became a (huge!) fashion thing right after Brigitte Bardot married in a pink vichy dress.

Vichy in 2017
This spring/summer vichy is back and it seems like all major retailers have embraced the trend. You simply cannot walk into say Zara or Mango without spotting it (a lot).
As I said before, I really like the trend. I do have a thing for french classics anyway, so this one seems to be right up my alley. When it comes to combining it I would keep it simple, mix a vichy dress with a pair of flat sandals for example or wear a vichy shirt with a pair of straight, cropped jeans. If you’re worried you’ll look to polished, girly or sweet: look for contrasts to make it more interesting.

What do you think of this pattern? How would you wear it?
